Review: CyLeina Black Pearl Organic Soap

Another Cyleina organic soap I am using is the product line's best seller, the Black Pearl. Since it claims to whiten skin tone instantly, I decided to use it on darker areas of my body such as my elbows, knees, thighs, underarms as well as on areas with dark scars and blemish.

Unlike other organic soaps that sting, this one doesn't. It gives a cool sensation instead. It isn't bubbly unlike other soaps and the scent isn't harsh either. This soap is black but creates creamy white suds when lathered.

The product claims that results can be seen as early as first use and I can attest to that. The darker areas in my body have improved significantly. The soap is so effective that I told my mom to use it in order to get rid of the brown spots (due to aging) on her face. Like me, she is so happy with the result because the spots have started to lighten.

I wish I have discovered this a long time ago. I might have even skin tone by now... :D

I put this on last night to go out with my husband and then went to eat. I have tried many eyeliners “water proof, smudge proof, last 24 hrs.) But they always leave black under my eyes where they smear. I always find my self going back to elf. But i also rub my eyes and still rub off my eyeliner. Well i was surprised that when i put Envy Derm eyeliner, i could touch it and it did “not” come off on my finger. So i went about my day. I’m sure i rubbed my eyes a hundred times. Well every time i checked i was happy to see my eyeliner not smeared or rubbed off, Or worse under my eyes. I also curle my eyelashes. If you do to you notice every time you do some fall out. I have thin eyelashes and what girl does not want fuller lashes. So if i can wear my eyeliner all day no smear and know its helping my lashes is a win win for me.

Review: Cyleina Organic Rice Bran Soap

Around a week ago, I started using Cyleina Organic Rice Bran soap. I wanted to buy each variant available but since I still have Black Pearl and Tomato soapat home, I decided to choose only one. And besides, I wanted to stick to my grocery list so other variants will have to wait until next pay day. I wouldn't want to use all of them at once anyway.
:D

Going back to the soap, I chose the rice bran variant because based on the product label, this soap helps reduce inflammation and soothe discomfort - exactly what my mother needs to alleviate the discomfort she feels from her rashes.

Just like what I am doing with other organic soaps, I sliced this soap into cubes to prevent it from dissolving so easily. Initially, I used this soap in my face every morning (with black pearl) and night. But after a couple of days, I decided to use this soap in my entire body.

Unlike black pearl and tomato soaps, this light brown soap doesn't emit strong scent. It doesn't even sting when used for the first time. I think, of all the three Cyleina soaps I have tried, this one is the most easy to lather. A few rub with the soap and nylon mesh goes a long way.

What I like most about Cyleina rice bran soap is that smooth-feeling skin I get after using this soap. Truly it helps exfoliate the skin. And since it aids in exfoliation, I am hoping that it will help eliminate some dark spots and blemishes around my body. My mother loves it too because the rash in her arms, waistline and thigh is no longer causing her so much discomfort.

I will definitely purchase this soap again.

Ingredients:
Vegetable oil, almond oil, cocoa butter, rice bran oil, rice bran powder and essential oil

Product Description:
A source of vitamin E complex, antioxidants and other micronutrients to help fight free radicals and combat the effects of aging. Rice bran’s natural enzyme will helps to dissolve dead skin & blemishes, while retaining moisture.

Claims:
  • protects and replenishes the skin
  • good with skin allergies; helps reduce inflammation and soothes discomfort
  • helps fight free radicals and combats the effects of aging
  • helps dissolve dead skin and blemishes
  • aids in gentle exfoliation
  • disinfects pimples
  • smoothens the texture of skin

Rate:
4/5

Pros:
  • light-smelling
  • makes skin smooth and squeaky-clean
  • helps lighten dark spots
  • affordable
  • can now be bought in Watson's and SM department stores

Cons:
  • none

Review: Godiva LicoWhite Whitening Lotion with SPF15

Hi lovely ladies! How was your Monday? Did you punch Monday Blues on the face? Or did you let it consume you? In any case, I do hope your day went smoothly. As for me, well, it's been drizzling the entire day. Surprisingly, the cool weather fueled me to turn my engine on and be productive. Needless to say, I had a great start. Anyway, today I'd like to share my thoughts on Godiva LicoWhiteTM Whitening Lotion with SPF15.

I'm not exactly a lotion person, and yes, I know it's a mortal sin to not moisturize. The thing is, I have this love-hate relationship with lotions, especially the sticky ones that does not seem to seep through. I hate it when there's a thick gunk sitting uncomfortably on top of my skin; it makes me want to run back to the shower and scrub it away, ASAP. But my feelings toward lotions changed when I started using the Godiva LicoWhiteTM Whitening Lotion.

It claims to help even out discolorations caused by age, scarring, and pregnancy. It also promises to give you longer-lasting, whiter skin due to its Glabridin content; a powerful skin whitening ingredient from licorice extract. Glabridin has been shown to effectively inhibit melanogenesis or the process of melanin production. Melanin is a pigment that causes skin discoloration.

It wasn't love-at-first-sight, or touch, for that matter. It actually turned me off the first time I used it because I didn't like the scent. I would describe it as soapy with hints of herbs due to its licorice content. It was rather too strong for my liking, but I eventually got accustomed to the it after weeks of usage.

You can see here that the product has started to slide down while I was taking a photo.
That's how runny the formula is.

The reason why I disregarded the scent was because, the formula is heavenly. It's exactly what I'm looking for in a lotion: runny and lightweight.  It's so easy to spread and it gets easily absorbed by the skin; no sticky feeling with this one. It makes my skin supple and radiant-looking, which is a plus for me. As for its whitening effects, I have not seen any significant changes on my skin color. For the record, I have been using it for 5 months already, on and off.

WHAT I LIKE:

- Affordable at 120php (100ml). It also comes in sachet, which is retailed at 8php (6ml) each,
- Easily available at Watsons,
- Light-weight,
- Does not leave sticky film on the skin,
- Handy packing with flip-top cap,
- Has SPF 15,

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:

- Not a fan of the licorice scent

VERDICT:

Godiva LicoWhite Whitening Lotion is a pretty basic body moisturizer that's perfect for everyday use. It's very lightweight, so you won't have to worry about turning into a pool of sweat under intense humidity. It also has the right amount of SPF, enough for daily commutes. I've been constantly reaching for it even if I'm just at home. I'm glad to have found a lotion that does not give me that dreaded "sticky feeling".  That's saying a lot because I am very picky with lotions.

TO WHOM DO I RECOMMEND?

To anyone who wants a lightweight, easily absorbent lotion that won't break the bank. Also, if you don't mind "earth-y" scents, this one's for you.

WILL I REPURCHASE?

Maybe not. I have to search for another lotion with the same formula, but with a milder scent. It's about time that I start exploring the world of lotions. Suggestions, anyone?

Review: CyLeina Organic Tomato Soap

I have been hearing good things about CyLeina Organic Soaps and have been considering of using one for a few weeks already. But since I do not know any reseller in our city, my only option is to order online which I have no time to do so (especially deposit money in the bank) due to work, "other work" and travel planned months ago. Additionally, I also wanted to order in bulk so as to save on shipping but I cannot do so as of the moment because I am running low on funds due to my recent activities.

Fortunately, my co-worker who is an ardent user of the product line decided to sell us some of the soaps she hoarded. I bought one tomato organic soap and one Black Pearl (review to follow), the line's best seller. I chose tomato over other soap variants because it says to help dry up pimples quickly as well as clean and minimize pores. I am not pimply but I do have large pores that often result to large blackhead if not addressed early on.

Unlike other organic soaps that cause stinging sensation during first use,CyLeina Organic tomato soap doesn't. It isn't bubbly but creates rich lather instead. The scent isn't even too strong but just enough to make you feel that you are indeed using an organic soap; sweet and yummy! :D

After using, my skin feels smooth and clean without making it dry or tight-feeling. It reduces oiliness thereby lessens the chances of developing annoying pimples. I’ve been using it for a week and I am now starting to see desirable results when it comes to my pores. But I have yet to see the effects of long-term use. This product has one downside however. It made my face dry but that is what facial moisturizers are for. :D

Will update this post when I see dramatic improvement on my pores.

Ingredients:
saponified oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, organic tomato extracts

Product description:
Contains rich tomato extract that is rich in AHA(Alpha Hydroxy Acids), peels dead skin cells and speeds up cell renewal. Great for drying acne.

Rate:

4/5

Pros:
  • Contains natural ingredients like jojoba oil, sweet almond oil and organic tomato extracts
  • Cleans and tightens pores
  • Scent isn't too strong
  • Skin feels refreshed after wash
  • Dries up pimple quickly
  • Comes in fun color

Cons::
  • Dissolves quickly
  • Limited resellers (in our area) thus the need to order online

Tangee Lipstick Review

When's the last time you treated yourself to a new tube of lipstick? Many economists and social scientists have noticed a trend dating back to the Great Depression that during tough economic times, cosmetic sales tend to increase. The explanations for this noteworthy phenomenon range from insightful to outright fanciful, but generally it is believed women strapped for cash will splurge on a new shade for their lips rather than more expensive items like a new dress.

At almost $15 a tube, I wouldn't say Tangee is the cheapest lipstick around, but given the brand has been around for almost a century, its formula virtually unchanged during that time, I thought a vintage-loving gal like me should pick up a tube, regardless of the state of the economy.

Tangee's fame lies in its unusual color-changing characteristic, hence the motto "The Lipstick That Changes Color to Become Uniquely Your Own". In short, this vibrant orange gloss-like lipstick turns an elegant shade of red with a hint of purple within seconds of applying it to your lips.

How does this happen?
Well, the website Cosmetics and Skin explains how the synthetic dye eosindiscovered in the late nineteenth century was added to Tangee and other lipsticks of the early twentieth century to create a new type of "indelible" color, that is, color that cannot be rubbed of the lips easily.

The mechanism responsible for this attribute was fundamentally different from how other lipsticks colored the lips. Traditional lipsticks contained pigments are already present and active even before the product touches the skin. In the case of Tangee and other "indelible" lipsticks, the eosin dye reacts with your skin's proteins to create a vibrant reddish color with the slightest hint of purple.

Thus Tangee technically falls under the category of lip stain as opposed to true lipstick. (Incidentally eosin is still used for staining tissue samples in laboratories....)
A smear of Tangee lipstick on my hand produces this pleasant reddish shade

So how does it become "Uniquely Your Own"? I'm not sure it does. Some say it reacts to the temperature or pH of your skin, but I've yet to see a scientific explanation for either of those claims. I'm not sure given the nature of eosin how this reaction could produce a different color on different people, unless you take into account the different underlying skin tones.

The Review

Tangee Lipstick comes in a black tube with a thick gold band, containing 0.13 oz. (3.7 grams) of the product. The logo with its unmistakeable 1920s/1930s font is emblazoned in gold on one side of the tube. The tube itself is nestled in an attractive black box decorated with the telltale logo flanked on either side with orange blossoms and golden tendrils.

When you remove the lid, you instantly notice its sweet perfume smell, reminiscent of roses and fragrances of bygone days. This is one of my favorite aspects of Tangee lipstick, although I understand our preference for scents can be an intensely personal thing.

The light but vibrant, almost neon tangerine color of the unused product provided the inspiration for its name.

Tangee resembles a gloss or balm. A smooth translucent coat is created by the wax, oil, and lanolin, with the color itself resulting from a dye that stains the proteins on the surface of your skin.

It goes on clear and remains this way for a second or two. Suddenly its shade will transform.

On me it creates to a reddish-pinkish color. My camera refused to capture the shade accurately, but the picture above is a fairly good approximation.

Unlike those old color-changing rings and hypercolor shirts, Tangee is not a "mood" lipstick. It does not alter its hue based on how hot or cold I'm feeling, or whether I'm enjoying acidic or basic foods for a meal. From one day to the next its color has remained consistent.

Right now Tangee is my go-to lipstick because the color stays even when the gloss itself wears off, this being a wonderful feature of lip stains. Even rubbing my lips won't remove the color. For that I need a decent cold cream or a good exfoliation.

You'll have to decide for yourself whether the price ($14.95) is reasonable. Browsing some old advertisements for Tangee, I discovered on page 51 of Volume 84 from the Druggist's Circular, (printed in 1940) that a tube of the original formula, called "natural Tangee lipstick", used to cost $0.89!

Tangee is among the earliest lipstick brand out there, dating back to the 1920s or 1930s. Although it disappeared from the market in the 60s, TheVermont Country Store acquired the rights to its name and unique formula, and currently they are the exclusive producers and distributors of the brand.

Want a tube of your own? Here's the link to buy Tangee lipstick at the Vermont Country Store. (And if you're wondering, I haven't been paid or compensated by the good folks at the Vermont Country Store for writing this review!)
